Neal Ferri of Quality VAKuum Products Inc. will demonstrate the use of vacuum technology in the woodshop and also host a Q&A session. Neal has been working with vacuum systems in the woodworking industry since 1991. Drawing on more than three decades of hands-on experience, this seminar provides a practical introduction to vacuum pressing and its many applications in the modern shop.

The seminar will cover the fundamentals of vacuum pressing, including an overview of the different types of vacuum systems and how they function. We will explore how vacuum technology is used for veneering and laminating, as well as vacuum hold-down applications for machining and assembly.

Attendees will see demonstrations of common vacuum sources, vacuum bags, and frame presses, along with examples of using vacuum as an effective hold-down tool. We will also discuss how vacuum systems are used across the woodworking and fabrication industries, from small custom shops to larger production environments.

The session is designed to be informative and interactive, with ample time for questions. Whether you are new to vacuum pressing or looking to better understand how to integrate vacuum systems into your workflow, all questions are welcome.

On site and on street parking is available but carpooling is encouraged. Bring your own chairs.

Additionally for those who cannot attend in-person, the meeting will be broadcast via a Zoom link.

After the session, those who have time and appetite will head out for lunch.

    • March 14, 2026
    • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
    • Lincoln-Sudbury High School, 390 Lincoln Road Sudbury, Ma. 01776

One of our most prolific furniture making members, Dave McCormick will discuss several projects that were challenging for him to make.

Dave will bring several portable projects and show where the challenges lay, and how he overcame them. Other projects will be described through photos. Dave will briefly discuss how to recover from mistakes. We all make them.

There is plenty of parking, much of it covered.

There are many stools in the high school shop, but bring a chair for additional comfort.

Remember that there will be coffee available for $2 per cup. As usual, a lunch group will gather at the end of the session.

Furniture Maker and Artist Aspen Golann on Blending Furniture Forms with Sculpture and Social Practice

She will demonstrate her airbrush techniques juxtaposing her respect for traditional furniture with her advocacy for equity and inclusion as well as discuss her role with The Chairmaker's Toolbox. Trained as a 17th-19th century woodworker, Aspen explores gender and power through the manipulation of iconic American furniture forms. She teaches furniture design at The Rhode Island School of Design, holds a degree from The North Bennet Street School, and teaches craft workshops internationally.

Her work has been featured on NPR and PBS and published in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Remodelista, Vogue, Hyperalleric, This is Colossal, Elle, Luxe, Fine Woodworking, and American Craft.

She has received support for her work from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Vacheron Constantine, The Windgate Foundation, The United Artists Foundation, Winterthur Museum, The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and others. She is the recipient of the 2025 Artisan-in-Residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2025 United States Artist Fellowship, the 2023 Award in Craft from The Maxwell Hanrahan Foundation and the Mineck Furniture Fellowship from The Society of Arts & Crafts.

In 2020, Aspen founded The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, an initiative designed to create pathways for marginalised makers into traditional craft practices. In support of the project, she has partnered with museums, schools, and chairmakers around the world.

Born and raised outside of Boston, she now lives and works in New Hampshire.

Aspen serves on the boards of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, A Workshop of Our Own, The Furniture Society, and The Society of Arts + Crafts.
